Curriculum
At Newtown Nursery School, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, which supports children from birth to age five.
Children learn best through rich experiences—playing, exploring, interacting, and being supported by skilled adults. When given the right environment, they can investigate, reflect, plan, and think deeply. With sensitive guidance, children build confidence, develop independence, and form positive relationships with others.
The EYFS highlights the Characteristics of Effective Learning, which focus on how children learn, not just what they learn. At Newtown, our provision is thoughtfully designed around these characteristics to support every child’s development.
We aim to promote:
Playing and Exploring – Engagement
- Finding out and exploring
- Playing with what they know
- Being willing to ‘have a go’
Active Learning – Motivation
- Being involved and concentrating
- Keeping on trying
- Enjoying achieving what they set out to do
Creating and Thinking Critically – Thinking
- Having their own ideas
- Making links
- Choosing ways to do things and carrying them out
The EYFS also identifies seven areas of learning and development—these represent the content of what children will learn.
The three prime areas, which are fundamental to all learning, are:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
These prime areas provide the foundation for the four specific areas:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Together, these areas and characteristics support the development of the whole child—emotionally, socially, physically, and cognitively—ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.
